THE CREATING THE LEGEND COLLECTION
AVAILABLE APRIL 2008

Welcome to the official Sands of Gallipoli website. Here you can find information about the Sands of Gallipoli collections, and how to purchase them, as well as media resources including press releases and product images.

In 1914, the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) and the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) were joined to create the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC). Originally to be sent to join the fight against Germany in France, they were diverted to Egypt for training after Turkey entered the war.
After the Royal Navy failed to breach the Turkish defences at the Dardanelles, a British plan was hastily cobbled together to launch a series of landings on the Gallipoli Peninsula. British and French troops were to land at Cape Helles and the ANZACs on the western side at Gaba Tepe.
Unfortunately, the ANZACs were landed more than a mile north of the intended target and, instead of the open Plains of Maidos, they were forced to attack in the broken foothills of the Sari Bair Range. Militarily they were never to recover from this disaster. It marred the plan and made their task impossible.
Few of the 12,000 ANZAC troops that landed that day could have foreseen what lay ahead and how their actions would contribute to shaping the culture and spirit of their nations. It is a legend that will remain etched forever in the hearts and minds of Australians and New Zealanders.

Sands of Gallipoli "Our People" Limited Edition Medallion - Artillery

At Anzac the Allied artillery was hampered by a shortage of ammunition, the narrowness of the Anzac position and the steep and rugged terrain, which provided few positions to site their guns. However, the gunners displayed the same fortitude, courage and resourcefulness as other troops, even hauling their guns into the front lines to provide fire support. They too fought, endured, sickened and weakened under the harsh Gallipoli conditions and left many of their number in cemeteries across the peninsula. To order this or other items from the Sands of Gallipoli Our People Limited Edition Medallion Collection click here.

Sands of Gallipoli "Our People" Limited Edition Medallion - Infantry

Australian and New Zealand infantry fought side by side at the Landing and their combined defence of the ANZAC perimeter created firm bonds of mutual respect. Australian infantry are best known for their actions at the Landing, Krithia and at Lone Pine, in the latter suffering 2277 casualties and being awarded seven Victoria Crosses. The New Zealand infantry also fought at the Landing and Krithia, but their best known achievement was the capture and defence of Chunuk Bair on 8 August, from where they looked down at the Dardanelles and for a vital day held ‘open the door to victory’. Of the 700 men of the Wellington Infantry Battalion who took the crest that morning, only 70 walked off it when relieved by men of the Otago Battalion and New Zealand Mounted Rifles that night. To order this or other items from the Sands of Gallipoli Our People Limited Edition Medallion Collection click here.

Sands of Gallipoli "Our People" Limited Edition Medallion - Medical

A soldier wounded at ANZAC became involved in a process of care that stretched from the firing line to hospitals in Malta, Egypt, Lemnos, Britain, Australia and New Zealand and included treatment by doctors, nurses, stretcher bearers and others. His first treatment may have been provided by a stretcher bearer or medical officer of his own battalion or regiment; he may then have been carried to a casualty clearing station or field hospital by the field ambulance and evacuated by hospital ship. In hospital he may have been visited by volunteers of the Voluntary Aid Detachment or Red Cross. Poor staff work before the landings in April caused great delays in treatment and much suffering and death. The Australian Army Medical Corps suffered 94 deaths and hundreds of other casualties at Gallipoli. To order this or other items from the Sands of Gallipoli Our People Limited Edition Medallion Collection click here.

Sands of Gallipoli "Our People" Limited Edition Medallion - Mounted

In May 1915, members of the Australian Light Horse and New Zealand Mounted Rifles, after leaving their horses in Egypt, began to arrive at Gallipoli to replace casualties among the infantry. They were to fight dismounted throughout the campaign. Like the infantry, they garrisoned the trenches and fought in many actions, the most tragic and famous for the Australians being the charge at the Nek on 7 August, where they suffered nearly 400 casualties. On the night of 6/7 August, the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade, supplemented with soldiers from the New Zealand Maori Pioneer Battalion, ‘opened the door’ for the August offensive by capturing Turkish posts in the foothills north of ANZAC in a series of attacks described as an unsurpassed, ‘magnificent feat of arms’. By the end of the month this 2400 strong brigade had been reduced to only 365 men. To order this or other items from the Sands of Gallipoli Our People Limited Edition Medallion Collection click here.

Sands of Gallipoli "Our People" Limited Edition Medallion - Navy

The Royal Australian Navy’s contribution to the Gallipoli campaign was small but dramatic. As the first ANZAC troops landed on the hostile enemy coast, the submarine AE2 became the first allied vessel to penetrate the Turkish Dardanelles defences. She was scuttled by her captain after encounters with the enemy in the Sea of Marmora four days later. Her crew was captured and imprisoned for three and a half years. The RAN Bridging Train served with the British forces at Suvla Bay, where they constructed piers, wharves and other structures and developed a reputation for being able to build anything that was required. Members of the Bridging Train were among the last evacuated from Suvla, and were probably the last Australians evacuated from Gallipoli.
No New Zealand ships served at Gallipoli, though HMS Philomel, with a largely New Zealand crew, escorted the first troop convoy to leave New Zealand waters and many New Zealanders served in the Royal Australian Navy and the British Royal Navy. HMS Philomel also bombarded, and landed shore parties against Turkish positions in the Mediterranean.   Sands of Gallipoli "Our People" Limited Edition Medallion - They Also Served

Fighting was not the primary role of all the troops at Gallipoli. Signallers served in the trenches or at headquarters near the beach. Engineers supported the troops in the front lines, cut roads, sank wells and built piers. Other troops, such as those of the Army Service Corps, stockpiled and distributed supplies to the fighting troops and men of the ammunition columns supplied them with ammunition, while mule teams carted stores up the gullies and ridges. Despite this support, much of the labouring work still fell to the fighting troops. Nowhere at ANZAC was safe, and even men working on the beach were killed and wounded by enemy shell-fire. Sands of Gallipoli Limited Edition Medallion - Leaving Australia

As the first troops of the newly formed Australian Imperial Force set sail for war on November 1st 1914, they did so with a selfless instinct to help "the Mother country". This attitude, buoyed by Prime Minister Andrew Fisher's commitment to help Britain "to our last man and our last shilling", spread rapidly across the nation as reports of Australian gallantry at Gallipoli filtered home. Man and boy alike rallied to embark for battle and for adventure. By the end of the war more than 331,000 Australians had volunteered and fought overseas in the AIF - the only all-volunteer army in the war. Sands of Gallipoli Limited Edition Medallion - Training in Egypt

En route to Gallipoli the Australian Imperial Force gathered in Egypt to ready the men for war. For most it was their first experience in a 'foreign' culture and itself a great adventure. At the Mena camp, in the shadows of the great pyramids, the men prepared for the hardships of battle in searing temperatures, blinding sandstorms and primitive conditions. Anzac Commander in Chief, General Sir William Birdwood, soon taught these new recruits army discipline and imbued them with a sense of mission that, combined with growing mateship and national pride, would serve them well in the long hard slog they would face on the rugged Gallipoli Peninsular. Sands of Gallipoli Limited Edition Medallion - The Landing

At 4.30am on April 25th 1915, as dawn's first dim light illuminated the narrow beach and towering cliffs of the Gallipoli Peninsular, the first wave of Anzacs landed amid a torrent of enemy fire. These, the brave men of the AIF 3rd Brigade under Major General E.G. Sinclair-MacLagan, relentlessly charged the waiting Turkish soldiers, pushing across the beach and up the steep cliffs, forcing their foe back. Within 24 hours, despite continued and fierce enemy fire, 12,000 troops were ashore and the beachhead held. But a great cost was exacted in this the largest amphibious invasion of its time. In just one day 2,000 Australians had given their lives on the beach at Gallipoli. The battle lines were set. Sands of Gallipoli Limited Edition Medallion - The Battle of Lone Pine

Consigned to their trenches since the Gallipoli landing, the Anzacs and Turkish Army were pitted in a deadly stalemate - the Anzacs unable to expand their territory, the Turkish unable to regain lost ground. But on August 6th 1915, in a desperate rush of audacity, Australian soldiers from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Brigades charged across no man's land, through withering enemy fire, toward Lone Pine. The Turkish trenches, even though covered with logs, were overwhelmed by a resolve unmatched. As one of the greatest allied victories of the Gallipoli campaign the bloody battle for Lone Pine was testament to the Anzac's bravery. In capturing Lone Pine seven soldiers won Victoria Crosses for outstanding gallantry. Two thousand Australians gave their lives. Sands of Gallipoli Limited Edition Medallion - The Battle of The Nek

One of the bravest, yet ill-fated, charges mounted by Australians at Gallipoli was the attack on the Nek. In the cool dawn air of August 7th 1915 at 4.30am a whistle signalled the charge. Out of the trenches poured the young Anzacs of the 8th and 10th Light Horse Regiments to be greeted by the waiting massed rifles and machine guns of Turkish defenders. Four waves of young Anzacs responded to the shrill whistle and charged into no man's land and the waiting onslaught. Within minutes 234 young Light Horsemen were struck down. The futile attack was halted but the selfless bravery shown that morning will live on forever in the Anzac legend. Sands of Gallipoli Limited Edition Medallion - Retreating with Honour

After nine months defiantly defending a hopeless position the Anzacs decided to break the stalemate and slip quietly away. On December 18th and 19th 1915, in a masterly operation of subterfuge organised by Australia's General Brudenell White, more than 40,000 troops were evacuated without the loss of a single man. Although the Anzacs had not captured the Gallipoli Peninsula both ally and foe respected their courage and persistence. Of the 50,000 Australians who served at Gallipoli 8,709 died. New Zealand lost 2,701 men. The surviving Anzacs moved to the Western Front to take up the fight again - with the same spirit and fortitude that shaped the Anzac legend on the beaches of Gallipoli.
