Description: En route to Gallipoli the Australian Imperial Force gathered in Egypt to ready the men for war. For most it was their first experience in a 'foreign' culture and itself a great adventure. At the Mena camp in the shadows of the great pyramids the men prepared for the hardships of battle in searing temperatures blinding sandstorms and primitive conditions. Anzac Commander in Chief General Sir William Birdwood soon taught these new recruits army discipline and imbued them with a sense of mission that combined with growing mateship and national pride would serve them well in the long hard slog they would face on the rugged Gallipoli Peninsular. Each box features a vial of Gallipoli sand and a numbered certificate of authenticity.
